Here on the Chesapeake Bay, the dog days of summer have arrived a bit early. When the weather is too hot to do anything but sit back with a tall cool glass of lemonade, I think it is literally nature’s way of telling us to “chill out.” And while we are at it, there is plenty of wonderful fresh local produce available to nourish our bodies while supporting the local economy. North Beach has a farmer’s market every Friday evening complete with wine tastings, freshly popped kettle corn, and a classic car cruise-in. Living here is like going back to the future, when neighbors knew one another and walking along the boardwalk was the favorite past-time.
Wherever you are located, I hope that you are enjoying the season and taking the time to slow down, relax and renew. Our team will be taking some vacation time next month, but don’t hesitate to give us a call if there is anything you need. I’ excited to share my first Team Northrup byline with you…an article on ”Mastering the Inner Game of Success” (see below). And we hope to see you at Dr. Northrup’s next telegathering, “The Luscious Flourishing of Summer” (details below).
HEALTH TIP: Safe, Fun, Summer Exercise
Lynn Bakken, MS, PNP
Outdoor exercise can be challenging when the temperature soars. Stay safe during hot-weather exercise by drinking enough fluids, wearing proper clothing and timing your workout to avoid extreme heat.
How hot weather affects your body: Exercising in hot weather may place extra stress on your heart and lungs. Exercise itself and the warmer air temperature increase your body temperature. To dissipate heat, more blood circulates through your skin, leaving less blood for your muscles, which increases your heart rate. If the humidity is high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin, pushing your body temperature higher.
Hydrate before, during and after your workout. Getting fluid inside you helps with thermal regulation. Drinking water while you exercise is essential, but it’s even better to hydrate before you start because it increases your body’s ability to maintain a proper temperature and can help your heart maintain a steady pace so you won’t feel like you’re exerting more effort than you really are. Drink water before, during and after exercising. Your body can only absorb 8 ounces of cold water every 20 minutes, so continue to drink fluids even after you no longer feel thirsty. Your body can easily lose up to a quart of water an hour while exercising in hot weather.
Get used to the heat first. It may take 10-14 days for your body to acclimate to the hotter days of summer. Giving your body time to adjust lowers the stress on your heart and can reduce the amount you sweat. Begin the process in increments. If you’re used to exercising 30 minutes at a time, cut that by a third and then slowly increase. Exercise less intensely for 10 minutes outside for the first few workouts, then add another 10 after a few outdoor sessions.
Stick to morning workouts and remember safety. Timing can be everything! Research has shown that cool morning air boosts your endurance, more so than trying to work out after the sun goes down at night. It’s also easier to be seen than in the dark. Drivers need to see bikers and joggers at a distance of 550 feet to safely stop. After dark, wear reflective clothing or tape since white clothing is only visible up to a distance of 220 feet. When using a scooter, bicycle, skateboard or rollerblading … don’t forget your helmet! Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head injury by 85% and the risk of brain injury by almost 90%.
Invest in synthetics. You’ll do yourself a favor by investing in sweat-wicking synthetic shirts rather than reaching for that old cotton T-shirt, which traps sweat next to your skin and doesn’t allow it to evaporate.
Know when to call it quits. During hot-weather exercise, be on the lookout for heat-related illness. Signs and symptoms may include weakness, headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, rapid heartbeat. If you suspect a heat-related illness, stop exercising and get out of the heat. Drink water, and wet and fan your skin. If you don’t feel better within 60 minutes, contact your doctor. If you develop a fever higher than 102 F (38.9 C) or become faint or confused, seek immediate medical help.

Success Story of the Month
Deb Kern, Ph.D., Team Northrup Leader

Since joining the world of health care as a nurse in the late 1970’s, I have spent my life seeking ways to help people live healthy, fulfilled lives. In the 1980s I worked in preventive medicine, helping people understand the importance of exercise and good nutrition. In 1990,my passion for finding effective methods for enhancing people’s health and wellbeing led me to a doctoral program in Health Sciences, researching mind/body interactions and healing through movement. Upon completion of my doctorate I lived on a Yoga Ashram to study the benefits of a yogic lifestyle, took an apprenticeship in Ayurveda – the ancient system of healing from India, became a teacher of Nia – a mind/body/spirit movement technique, studied herbal medicine with a group of women in the rain forest of Costa Rica called Mujeres Unidas de Sarapiqui, and I became certified as a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist.
Along the way, I co-authored a book with my dear friend and colleague, Dr. Karen Wolfe, called “Create the Body Your Soul Desires: The Friendship Solution to Weight, Energy and Sexuality.” Karen and I are passionate about helping women and men create health and well-being from the inside out. Although we were pleased with what we had to offer in our book, we often felt frustrated when recommending nutritional supplements to people until we learned from our mentor, Dr. Christiane Northrup, that USANA Health Sciences offers superior, pharmaceutical quality nutritional supplements and meal replacements.
When Dr. Northrup introduced me to the USANA business opportunity, I felt nervous about my ability to do the business. Although I was a believer in the quality of the products and had seen amazing results in clients, friends, family and myself (I was working 60 + hours a week at a 5-Star destination spa, was traveling 14 times a year to do speaking engagements and was raising a young son), I didn’t see how I could add one more thing to my schedule. Not only that, but my husband’s family business had filed bankruptcy 3 years prior, so we had no extra money to start a new venture. Those challenges, combined with my lack of desire to ‘sell’ anything, caused me to question how I could be successful with a USANA business.
Fortunately, I decided to give the business opportunity a chance. And I am so grateful I did! One year later, my USANA business was providing enough income for me to leave my full time work and focus more on USANA and being home for my family. I have never ever “pushed” a thing. I simply use the products for my family and myself and then I share the benefits with people when they express a need that USANA has an answer to.
Sometimes I share the health benefits of the products. Sometimes I share the financial freedom benefits of the business. But in every case, all I do is listen to people’s needs and match their needs with solutions that USANA can provide. When someone decides they wish to join as a business associate, I shift gears from listening to and matching their needs, and I become their coach and trainer. The way I see it, the way to build a successful business is to be a great coach and trainer to your new business associates.
So that’s the secret to my success in a nutshell: be a passionate consumer of USANA products; listen to and match people’s needs; then become their coach and trainer so they can do the same thing.
This Month’s Wealth Tip: Mastering the Inner Game of Success by Laurie Morin, North Beach, Maryland
When I first joined Team Northrup a little over a year ago, I was excited to learn that creating residual and passive income was the key to financial freedom! Like many of us, I had never learned those concepts at home or school. It was really empowering to know that there was a strategy for creating wealth, and it was not some secret known only by the favored elite.
As an educator and long-time “helping professional,” I loved the attraction marketing model. It seemed only natural to share products and opportunities that I truly believed would help the people I cared about become healthier and wealthier. But somewhere along the way I realized that there was a missing ingredient. I did sell some products and gave some more away to friends who really needed it. Everyone loved what we had to offer, but when it came time to really “close” a sale or enroll somebody in the business, I found that I was reluctant to ask the question.
What in the world was going on? Fortunately, some fabulous mentors put me in touch with the Energy Vampire that was sapping my energy. It was none other than my subconscious mind! Once I started listening to my Energy Vampire, I got a clear look at what was sabotaging my success. Here is an example of the dialogue that would go on in my head.
Me: It would be a wonderful thing to get Madame X on autoship. She has been under so much stress, this will really help her to feel better.
EV (Energy Vampire): You know Madame X has a limited income. How could you ask her to spend money on supplements? Just give her some samples and let her try them out for a while.
Me: I love telling people about the Team Northrup opportunity. What a great way for the wellness entrepreneurs I know to serve their customers while creating residual income for themselves.
EV: You can’t talk to wellness professionals about network marketing. They are following a spiritual path dedicated to helping people. They’re going to think you are some sleazy salesperson just trying to make money off of them.
I think you get the picture. I had one set of ideas in my head. I “believed” in the products, the company and the tremendous opportunity it offers. The idea of selling as spiritual service was the perfect antidote to my Catholic upbringing. But I had another set of beliefs in my subconscious mind, which connects straight to the heart. There I believed that selling was sleazy, wanting to make money was greedy, and that it would be more noble to just focus on “helping” people.
I had already tried all the recommended “fixes” for those self-limiting thoughts. Together with my partner, we created vision boards, wrote and listened to affirmations, we even tried self-hypnotherapy. We thought they were working, but then we attended T. Harv Ecker’s Millionaire Mind Intensive.
Much to our chagrin, we discovered that the old Energy Vampires were still right there in our subconscious, stealthily counteracting all the positive beliefs about wealth and success that we were feeding to our conscious minds. I would like to say that the Millionaire Mind Intensive changed everything overnight. The combination of visual, oral and kinesthetic strategies they used did help connect our heads to our hearts. We laughed, we cried, and we pushed our physical boundaries to break through the fears that were holding us back.Yes, we came home feeling fundamentally changed. But we also came to realize that building wealth, just like anything else worthwhile, is a lifelong process. At the risk of being trite, it is the journey that matters, not the end goal.
So, thank you Team Northrup, not only for providing the opportunity to create health and freedom…but also for the ongoing course in personal and spiritual development.
