Denise and I are in the third week of a 5-week sugar buster boot camp to tame our cravings for sugar and refined carbs, get off the sugar roller coaster, and develop healthy eating habits for life. The 13 members of our team have joined forces with more than 50 people around the country to learn, share ideas, and support one another through this process.
I have to admit, this is not the first time I’ve tried to “reform” my eating habits. I have always been a health nut, and I’ve followed just about every new diet discovery that comes out. The one thing I have learned is that they all lead to nowhere unless you actually change the way you think about eating and nutrition. You may feel great, lose weight, and think you have arrived at your destination…but if you haven’t changed your consciousness, you will go back to the same old eating habits with the same old results.
This time, I am determined that it will be different. As I prepare to celebrate the 30th anniversary of my 29th year on this planet , I am aware that my body needs to be treated well if I want to stay healthy and active.
Eating the low-glycemic way has incredible health benefits. Lots of scientists now think that inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) chronic diseases. According to Dr. Ray Strand, eating a healthy low-glycemic diet can help you lower your blood pressure, decrease your cholesterol levels and decrease your risk of both heart disease and diabetes. Cultivating gratitude every day of the year can make you healthier and happier. Robert Emmons, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis and author of Thanks! How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier (Houghton Mifflin, 2008), reports that being thankful can help you recover faster from illness and better handle chronic stress.
Thanksgiving is a traditional time to gather with family and friends and reflect on the blessings we’ve received, but why limit yourself to one day of gratitude a year?
Set aside just 5 minutes a day to reflect on your blessings, and see how much happier and healthier you can be. One great way to build gratitude into your life..start a gratitude journal. Dr. Emmons says that people who write down what they’re thankful for are 25% happier, exercise 33% more a week, sleep 30 minutes longer each night, and have 10% lower blood pressure!
The holidays are a time to enjoy with family and friends, but travel, stress and burning the candle at both ends can put a strain on the immune system. With the threat of swine flu sweeping our nation, it is more important than ever to keep your immune system healthy during the holidays.
Fortunately, scientists have learned a lot about how to strengthen your body’s immunity so you are less likely to fall prey to the virus and other seasonal illnesses.
One of the biggest new discoveries is the role that Vitamin D plays in keeping your immune system strong. We all think of Vitamin D as the “bone” vitamin because of its role in preventing rickets and osteoporosis. But researchers have found that it has many more important functions in our bodies, including support for cardiovascular health and the immune function.
According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, Director of the Cardiovascular Institute at the Columbia University Medical Center and host of The Dr. Oz Show, Vitamin D has been shown to be the most effective vitamin for a healthy immune system. In a recent University of Colorado study, volunteers whose D levels were highest were 40% less likely to report respiratory infections than those who were deficient in the nutrient.

The average American gains from 1 to 3 pounds during the holiday season, but you don’t have to resign yourself to such a fate. A few simple strategies can help you stay healthy during the holidays without sacrificing the joys of fun, friends and favorite holiday treats.
1. Abolish all or nothing thinking. If you over-indulge one day, you don’t have to punish yourself with guilt or slide down the slippery slope. Just enjoy the moment and get back on track at the very next meal.

4. Choose your treats wisely. Aim for around 400 calories 4 times per day. If you choose healthy snacks, you can afford larger portions. For example, at a cocktail buffet, you can have 1 ¾ cups crudités with ¼ cup hummus, 10 shrimp with cocktail sauce, and 5 crackers with 1 oz. of low-fat cheese for a total of only 341 calories.
5. Sip sparkling water with lime to join in the holiday spirit without adding unwanted calories. If you choose to indulge in cocktails, a white wine spritzer with fruit is a festive option that only adds 60 calories to your total. Alternate cocktails with sparkling water to stay hydrated and cut calories.
6. Focus on all the things you CAN eat instead of the things you should avoid. The season is full of healthy superfoods such as anti-oxidant rich pumpkin and squash, cranberries and apples.
